Subscription only -Single display Since May of this year, Autodesk has been shipping the highly anticipated update to its high-end post-production video editing suite, Smoke for Mac Smoke Extension 1 will be released on October Not only are there new features and updates to performance, but it is now more accessible to a wider user base with affordable monthly, quarterly and annual subscription plans. When we reviewed Smoke , we focused largely on its similarities to software titles like Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer, noting that it is clearly designed to make Final Cut users feel at home. Smoke retains the same clean user interface with smooth graphics and familiar layout. It also retains industry leading compositing and color-correction tools that have made it a must-have component in many production studios. The majority of the upgrades to this release are found under the hood, making it more stable, feature rich and compatible with the latest hardware and software on the market. Enhanced XML Support: Autodesk has made it easier than ever to add Smoke to existing FCP X-based workflows, with enhanced XML support that provides more accurate translation of timeline effects such as speed changes, scaling and transparency. Being able to transfer projects between apps in a fast predictable way allows for much greater flexibility in the studio. Imagine doing a quick edit in FCP, exporting that project to Smoke for Hollywood-grade compositing, and then sending it on to DaVinci for premium color grading.

November 9, What is Autodesk Smoke?! Autodesk Smoke combines powerful video effects capabilities with an easy-to-use editing platform. Wait — what’s a node-based compositor? Unlike layer-based compositors like Adobe After Effects , which render linearly from the bottom layer to the top, a node-based compositor allows you to quickly lay out extremely complex scenes and even 3D environments that can render in parallel! Node-based Compositing of 3D Text and Graphics This is why powerful node-based compositing is the mainstream for visual effects in the movie industry with packages like Nuke, Shake and Fusion. The other major advantage to node-based compositing is the intuitive way that the entire composition is shown to the user. This is why After Effects has its pseudo “node view” meant to mimic a node-based compositing UI-style. Smoke is also a full-fledged video editing software package. For Final Cut users, the keyboard shortcuts are exactly the same, so crossing over is easy but we’ll get into that a bit more later. As stated above, the keyboard shortcuts are the same as for Final Cut Pro 7.
